There’s no denying that a northern pike as small as four to six pounds can put up one heck of a fight. This is part of the reason why so many fresh water anglers love to pursue these hard fighting predatory fish. They’re fun to fish for, fun to catch, and they fry up really tasty, as well. It’s a winning combination, but for many avid pike anglers, fishing for normal pike just won’t do anymore. While in some places any pike over 20 pounds is considered a trophy, these fish can weigh over 40 pounds and any relatively new angler looking for that huge fish to mount on the wall will want to pay attention to any trophy northern pike fishing tips that any experienced angler is willing to share.
One of the best parts about pursuing one of these fish is that there isn’t the same upper end limit you might expect. What this means is that northern pike thrive in many areas, including many lakes that are hard to gain access to. So while a 15 lb largemouth bass is very large and very impressive, they are also very hard to find outside of a couple small areas in the South – and even then you will find far more 10 lb fish than 15 lb fish. With northern pike, in some lakes there seem to be entire populations of 20 or 30 lb trophy fish just waiting for the right angler to catch them.
The best advice when fishing for trophy northern pike is probably this: put in a ton of time on the water, and get your fishing for monster pike tips from professionals or semi-professionals who have actually been there and done that. Catching and landing a trophy northern pike is something to be proud of, and you want to make sure to have as much on your side helping you out as possible before manning (or womaning) up for the challenge.
