In terms of European golf holidays Portugal has some of the best courses to play in all of Europe. And thanks to its Mediterranean climate, most courses can be played all year round. This brief guide to the golfing regions in this scenic country provides some insight into the most popular golfing destinations.
For anyone who likes to play a different course every day on a golf holiday Algarve can offer over thirty excellent courses around Vilamoura alone that are well worth playing. Many golfers stay in Vilamoura town and venture out to great courses like Vale Do Lobo or the popular Oceanico Old Course. On the town’s outskirts there are numerous resorts, with Oceanico running over 7.
But golf in the Algarve is not just about Vilamoura. Out west, the Atlantic breeze adds some challenges to playing great clubs like the hillside Parque Da Floresta course and the championship course at Penina. In the Algarve’s eastern corner there are some very sophisticated resorts like the Quinta Da Ria and Quinta De Cima along with the world class Monte Rei.
The Oeste region is one of the countries up-and-coming golf regions. It has a mix of modern courses set in tranquil scenic countryside. Three gems worth seeking out are the Rainha Golf & Spa, Vimeiro and Falesia d’El Rey.
Around the city of Lisbon, in the Estoril region and along the river Tagus, lies over a dozen golf resorts and clubs all within a day-trip or short drive of the city. Some of the best courses include the Aroeira, Oitavos and Penha Longa. If your budget permits, try to play a round or two at Praia d’El Rey as the courses fairways and greens are some of the most professionally kept in the region.
Finally, for something a little different, many golfers enjoy a short break on the island of Madeira. The island only has 3 courses each traversing the islands volcanic hillsides. The Palheiro is rightly famous for its sea views across Funchal bay. Porto Santo is a championship course with an excellent design that recently hosted (2008) the Madeira Open. And for a little variety, the Santo de Serra has 27 holes that can be played in 3 variations.
